Wedding cakes come in all shapes, sizes and styles, so prices can vary quite a lot. A simple two-tier cake is going to cost less than a three-tier bespoke design covered in handmade sugar flowers, but the number of tiers is only part of the story.
The finish, decoration, display and time involved all make a difference too.

Cupcake and mini cake displays vary depending on the number required, the decoration and whether you would like a top tier. The minimum order is 36 cupcakes or 16 individual mini cakes.
What does a typical three-tier wedding cake cost?
A three-tier cake is still the most popular choice for many weddings.
A typical three-tier semi-naked cake costs around £475, including delivery and setup within 30 miles. That could include a cake for around 100 guests, decorated with ready-made flower sprays supplied by your florist.
A three-tier fully iced bespoke cake usually costs between £550 and £695, depending on the amount of detail involved. For example, a three-tier iced cake with large handmade sugar flowers would usually be around £675.
And no, naked and semi-naked cakes are not necessarily the “easy, cheap option”. They are held together with buttercream rather than a protective layer of sugarpaste and need plenty of care, especially during warmer weather. They may look relaxed, but they are not casually thrown together five minutes before I leave for the venue.
What about cupcake towers?
Cupcake towers are a lovely option when you want something easy to serve or a display with several flavours.
As an example, a five-tier tower with 60 cupcakes, three flavours, decorative cupcake wrappers, a top tier, delivery and setup, and stand hire would cost around £350.
Mini cake displays are also available, where guests receive their own individually decorated cake. These take more time than cupcakes because every tiny cake has to be finished separately, so the final price depends on the number and level of decoration. They are small. They are beautiful. They are also not made by helpful woodland fairies overnight.
What is included in your quote?
My wedding cake quotes include more than just the cake itself. Depending on the agreed design, your quote can include:
- An in-person or virtual design consultation
- Delivery within the agreed area
- Professional setup at your venue
- Handmade sugar flowers
- Safe attachment of fresh or silk flowers
- And out-of-hours WhatsApp access between 5pm and 9pm
You won’t be expected to transport the cake in the back of someone’s car while everybody holds their breath at every roundabout. I deliver it, set it up and make sure it looks exactly as it should before I leave.
Optional extras such as separator hire, cupcake stand hire, cake hoop hire or cookie setup are quoted separately.
Why do two three-tier cakes cost different amounts?
Because “three tiers” doesn’t tell you how much work is involved.
One cake may have a simple buttercream finish with flowers supplied by the florist. Another may include handmade sugar flowers, metallic details, different textures, separators, wafer-paper decoration or intricate piping.
They may be a similar size, but the time involved can be completely different. That is why I price each cake according to the actual design rather than using one flat price for every three-tier cake.
What budget should you allow?
As a general guide:
- Allow from £275 for a two-tier cake
- Around £450–£500 for a three-tier plain iced or semi-naked cake
- Around £550–£695 for a more detailed bespoke three-tier cake
- Around £350 for a larger cupcake tower with 60 cupcakes and a top tier
These are guide prices rather than rigid packages. Your final quote will depend on the style you choose, the number of servings required and how you would like the cake to be displayed.
A quick note about supermarket wedding cakes
Supermarket cakes can look like a cheaper alternative, but they are not usually a direct comparison.
They are often only around 2 to 2½ inches deep, whereas for example, my semi-naked cakes are approximately 7 inches deep per tier. So even when two cakes appear similar in width, the amount of cake and the overall impact can be very different.
A bespoke wedding cake price also covers the consultation, baking, decorating, equipment, transport, delivery and venue setup — not just flour, butter and sugar.
Your cake doesn’t have to be ruled by portions
Guest numbers matter, of course, but I don’t believe your whole cake design should be dictated by a portion chart.
The cake is part of your wedding display too. A smaller cake may look lost in a large venue, while a more dramatic design might suit the room perfectly even if you don’t need every tier for portions.
Extra cutting cakes can be provided behind the scenes to boost servings and give you more flavour options without changing the main display.
